New Zealand National Commission for UNESCO

The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) in NZ is governed by a Cabinet-appointed National Commission. In 2014 I was appointed Chair of the Youth Reference Group, after having sat in the inaugural group. As Chair I was a Special Advisor to the National Commissioners and had a speaking but non-voting governance role in this fascinating organisation. UNESCO is a widely misunderstood and underrated organisation, that continues to make significant contributions to global peace by promoting dialogue and cross-cultural understanding.

During my 30-month tenure with UNESCO I learned an enormous amount about governance and experienced a new style of Chairmanship from Ian McKinnon CNZM QSO JP, whose counsel I continue to appreciate. I continue to be awestruck by the passion, capability, and determination of Secretary General, Vicki Soanes, and owe a great deal of gratitude to her for backing of me in all aspects of life.
